We came, we saw, we conquered

So, we braved the National Cherry Blossom Festival yesterday.  The blossom peak was last Sunday, but the weather was gorgeous and the petals were just starting to rain down yesterday, so it turned out to be a really lovely day.

It was MM’s first trip to DC; we took the train (”wheeeeeee!”), which starts out (for us) with outside platforms (”Osside!”), then goes into a tunnel for awhile (”Daak,” followed by “Zzzzzz”).  Once we got to the Smithsonian exit, we were able to enjoy some classic Metro planning by waiting in line for the (one) elevator for about a half hour with all the other stroller/scooter-riders.

Because the Whole World was also visiting the trees, we kind of had to weave our way through the crowds, but the people thinned out on the Jefferson Memorial side of the tidal basin, and MM was able to run around for awhile without much impediment.

We headed back around 3:30, happily missing both rush hour and the inevitable last-minute elevator crunch to get out of town.  By this time, MM had gotten her third wind and was in rare form - welcoming people onto the train (”Hi evwyboyey!”), wishing them well on their subsequent travels (”Goo’bye, goo’bye!” ), and pulling her dress up over her head to pretend she was sleeping, and thereby revealing for all the world to see that Mommy forgot to change her diaper all day.

You are SO brave. We have yet to make it to a Cherry Blossom festival in the past, oh, almost 7 years! And the only DC place Em has seen is the National Zoo. Such slackers! Perhaps we’ll get our act together this summer… (But there’s so much to do in the ‘burbs!)

That is such a beautiful picture! I love Washington DC (my niece works at Catholic University) and enjoy visiting every once in a while.

Beautiful picture. It sounds like a fun outing. The subway with a kid can be fun. I hear you on the elevator thing. All the elevators at the L.A. subway stations stink to high heavens.

I hope you are doing well!

Kim - it was M. who got us to go. Me, I hate, hate, hate crowds, but he was really aching to get out of the house as a family (understandably). With the exception of the usual Metro messiness, it was actually a lot of fun.
Stephanie - Thanks! It was an unusually good picture - the rest of them are MM and my double chin.
Rachel - Thank you! The subway was fun; I was sure she was going to be miserable on the subway, but everything was So! New! that she had a blast. When I complained about the elevators and the generally poor planning of the Metro people, M. said that LA was worse - that cannot be good.
Margie - Hey! Thank you - it was a good day! I think I owe you mail; any respite in sight when we can do the coffee thing?? :)
